SUNNING IN THE HOOSAC

GEORGIA SYDNEY LASSNER

When I first arrived in North Adams to see the Hoosac River my immediate reaction was "I want to get in it! I want to have fun." I believe that by staging my bikini-beach chair scene in the river, where it does not belong, and has never happened before, the viewer will begin to reconsider the space. I envision the cold and starkness of the concrete river canal juxtaposed with the warmth of human interaction and bright summery clothing will create a scene that is in many ways absurdist. The viewers will see the action as ludicrous, perhaps funny, perhaps fun, but they will at least recognize that possibility lies where things were thought impossible; that a place is what you make of it, and with some attention, it can be completely transformed.
